Rubber Stamps + Vogue Magazines

I have a few hundred office rubber stamps that I have picked up over the years at estate sales.  I like them as objects, but thought I would try using them on some pages from 1920s Vogue magazines.

The Sock Market

collage with ink and papers from the NY Stock Exchange

This collage is in response to a very nice letter I received from a gentleman named Malcolm Turner.  I was more than happy to participate on this project and thrilled that my work inspired someone else.  "Global Recession" is the theme.  Be sure to check out Malcolm's fantastic work on his blog, Studio Journal or on Flickr.

Dear Angelica

I am currently completing an MA in Graphic Arts at the University of the West of England. Your work has been inspirational to me during my studies and has enabled me to focus the direction of my research. Additionally I have referred to your work for my evaluative thesis in identifying contemporary practitioners who have influenced my own practice.

I am a graphic designer, illustrator and musician based in Bristol, UK and My career history has included studio based consultancy, freelance illustration, graphic design and lecturing on Degree level programmes in graphic design. My own work with illustration and print investigates the medium of collage and has a focus on the visual aesthetic achieved with the use of aged, period/trend based ephemera. I am particularly concerned with the question of space and the balance and juxtaposition of elements on the page. My most recent work explores the paradox of digital intervention in the image/illustration building process and the referencing of influences from a pre-digital era.

I would like to invite you to contribute to my end of year show by making a response to the attached flyer. The response could be as simple as a few written words, a piece of ephemera, or a piece of work. Either way, a response will allow me to acknowledge your influence on my work at my show. The attached flyer will, I hope make sense.
Thank you in advance for any response and also for the inspiration you have given me.
Great work.

With best wishes
Malcolm Turner

Being a photo collector, I end up with thousands of damaged photos from lots.  As long as I have been collecting and collaging, I have made use of those marred photos.  I know some collectors who cringe when old images are used for art, but these were not pristine or even interesting.  I do keep the ones that are unusual or beautiful for my photo collection even if they are damaged.

The collages shown here were made either yesterday, or last year.  I like working with the photos on board, but I also have a very large group of snapshot collages that I have made over the years.  I have plans to put those in photo albums.  I will show some of those in a future post.
