Cottage Industry

unfinished ceramic head vase and invitation, Nikon FE2

This photo was taken at an estate sale that once had a ceramic studio in the garage.  All the molds and unfinished pieces were still there as well as paints, kilns, etc.  Based on the designs of the ceramics, they had stopped production sometime in the 1950s.

Let's Dance

 Nikon FE2

Another grainy shot with the high speed film. This was the last frame in the roll so didn't have the opportunity to get a better shot.   I recently bought the bendable toys at Round Top.  There are about ten different ones.  I will probably photograph them again.

A Reflection of Horror

Nikon FE2

I shot a bunch of photos at an estate sale with a higher speed b&w film since the lighting was poor in the home.  I had a few frames left, so took some experimental shots.  Not crazy about the grain, but I expected it due to the film speed.   This is a vintage child's halloween mask with the underside reflected in a mirror and natural light coming from skylights.  I really wanted to reflect my eyes in the sockets, but could not get the angle right.  I have to shoot with my glasses (my eyesight is horrible), and could not see what I was shooting when I removed my specs.

Fashion Forward

collage with oil paint, 8x10

One of our neighbors is a dealer of high end vintage posters.  Over the years, we have gone to his garage sales and bought some cool old posters, like of Push Pin or Olivetti ads, for a great price.  This last sale he had a stack of 1930s-50s French posters that had seen better days.  Too worn for resale, but cool enough for collage, so John bought me the pile for next to nothing.  This collage has elements from one of the posters.

Flying High

carnival, Nikon FE2, circa 1990s

This was taken at a carnival that had set up in a parking lot off a Houston highway sometime in the mid 1990s.  The rides were old and had clearly seen better days, but that didn't stop this girl from having a great time.  Everytime she came around in that bomb shaped rocket, she would flash her smile at me, missing teeth and all.  Pure, simple joy on a creaky, jerky old ride.

Assemblage #3 - Pinkie

dollar store tape dispensers, pink tape, and mag cutout

I didn't make an assemblage on Sunday.  Instead, I spent it with my lovely husband, hitting flea markets and antique shops.  The weather has been gorgeous so had to get out and enjoy it.  I will make two sometime this week to make up for it.  I also decided from day one that I will not be able to make tiny pieces to fit onto my small shelving.  I have another project in plan that I think will work better.

Also, FINALLY, I have all the collages packed from the 100 collage project and will send them off in this week's mail.  I'm sorry for the wait!

Assemblage #1 - I Only Have Eyes For You

dollar store kid's party glasses with magazine cutouts

I realized it was March 1st just an hour ago and remembered my assemblage project.  I quickly made these glasses for my first piece.  When I first wanted to start this project a few weeks ago, I headed to the dollar store to buy the bulk of my materials.  I thought that would help me tie together all the objects.  I plan to use them as a base and find the rest of the stuff around the house.  We'll see if it works.  This has a cutout on the back of the woman's face and I intended to shine light through the back to create more dimension, but had no batteries for my flashlight.  This is a lame start and am sure that I will have many misses, like in my 100 collage project, but I hope it will give me some ideas for future pieces.
